Restaurant de Kooning by Siam is located in a 17th-century warehouse on the Oudezijdsvoorburgwal, of which it occupies two floors. In the middle of Amsterdam’s ‘hot’ neighbourhood, it has been run since 1988 by owner Jan Derksen assisted by the Asian kitchen brigade and featuring chef Peter de Jongh. The interior can safely be called benevolent with a large amount of Thai art, curiosities and kitsch. However, the adage ‘excess damages’ does not apply as the furnishings are tasteful and measured, giving the place a distinct Thai feel.
